Finding ways to effectively lead diversity efforts is often seen as the grand challenge for today's leaders, particularly when you consider the complexity of a global workforce. In this course, join Stefanie Johnson as she discusses the benefits of diversity in general, and shares ways that organizations can enhance diversity and inclusion in different cultural contexts. Stefanie explains how prioritizing diversity can be beneficial to your business, goes over how to create a local or global strategy, and shares a real-world example to help you grasp what a global diversity strategy looks like in practice. Plus, she goes into using benchmarks to see if your diversity efforts are working, and details approaches to diversity and inclusion in different cultural landscapes.

Student Association Pilots Signage for Gender-inclusive Restrooms

Inclusive bathroom signage pilot program posted above a men's restroom sign.  The sign replicates the men's restroom symbol and the accessible icons, but add "Mind, Body, & Spirit" imagery.

Students, staff and faculty at the Redwood Campus may have noticed an interesting green dot appearing near restrooms. This is the “pilot” of new signage developed by the Salt Lake Community College Student Association (SLCCSA) after a year-long campaign on student healing: body, mind and spirit. The pilot signage was designed in consultation with SLCCSA, Queer Student Association (QSA) and SLCC’s Facilities department.
 
The pilot signage is a graphic representation related to a larger initiative about gender inclusive restroom facilities at SLCC. In Fall 2021, SLCCSA met with members of QSA regarding ongoing concerns from students about belonging on campus — namely whether SLCC policy protects trans-men, trans-women, and gender non-conforming students using restrooms based on gender identity rather than sex assigned at birth, regardless of expression. From there, SLCCSA student representatives consulted SLCC students, staff and faculty about the issue. As a result of their findings, SLCCSA Executive Council voted unanimously in support of future building projects at SLCC with inclusive restroom design. Currently, SLCC facilities staff have engaged an architectural firm to identify a potential space to pilot an inclusive restroom design. Details regarding this pilot restrooms are forthcoming and will be communicated to the campus community in the near future. SLCCSA and QSA endeavored to create a new signage campaign to communicate that the current restrooms are open to all students based on gender identity, which is affirmed by the individual. SLCCSA leaders have worked in tandem with SLCC administration in support of the inclusive bathroom signage. 

To date, the pilot signage has uncovered a formatting issue — the clings utilized are not sturdy enough and some are falling off the walls near the restrooms in certain locations. Some employees and students are confused about the intention behind the signage, which could be clarified with some additional text or information. Some community members commented that the pilot signage does not have a clear affiliation to SLCCSA, making it unclear who initiated the signage. A small number of students commented, that while they appreciate the signage does not replicate the “pink” and “blue” affiliated with “traditional” gender binaries, the chosen neon green color seems more like a warning sign. 
 
Anyone who has additional feedback on the pilot design can reach out to SLCCSA President Lindsay Simons at Lindsay.simons@slcc.edu. SLCCSA will review this feedback with key constituents, including the Queer Student Association (QSA) and SLCC Facilities department, as signage expansion to multiple campuses is considered.
 
Updates regarding the signage revisions and expansion to buildings on other campuses will be communicated in SLCC Today and The Globe newspaper. Students, staff and faculty can review a list of SLCC’s All Gender Restrooms on the GSSRC website.

Proven Success Strategies for Women at Work
Women are underrepresented in the C-suite. And women who aspire to leadership roles face unique challenges in today's companies. They are passed over for key opportunities, paid less than their male colleagues, and left out of critical networks and sponsor relationships. Additionally, smaller everyday challenges impede women's progress at work, like being interrupted in meetings, having their ideas stolen, or having to do 'invisible work' for no credit. Being a woman at work today requires a unique set of skills and strategies.

In this course, business consultants Deborah Kolb and Elizabeth Robillard help women learn these strategies so they can get the job they want, the pay they deserve, and the credit that counts. They provide guidance on how to identify challenges, negotiate for better opportunities and compensation, get helpful feedback, and create a network of support. In the course, they use scenarios of real women tackling these challenges and coming out ahead.

Staff Development will continue to partner with Salt Lake County Aging and Adult Services to offer ten new monthly Caregiver TalkingPoints workshops for SLCC employees who are caring for aging adults. These workshops help employees develop the skills needed to manage their 
caregiving responsibilities for a better work-life balance. Each workshop is an opportunity for a “discussion,” not a “listen in lecture” workshop. We encourage employees to come prepared to ask questions and share their challenges and accomplishments. 

The Caregiver TalkingPoints series qualifies as a Level 4 Employee Wellness Program.
Embracing Technology – Each year new tools and Apps are available to support and assist in care management. This Talking Point shares various ways technology can assist a caregiver and others to minimize stress, get organized, perform rapid communications, and complete tasks.

Presented by Kathy Nelson, Training Specialist, Salt Lake County Aging and Adult Services.

College Welcomes New Departmental Leaders

Please join the College in welcoming three new leaders of the People & Workplace Culture and Facilities departments.

Associate Vice President for People & Workplace Culture

Rick Enyard.

On June 1, Rick Enyard joined SLCC as associate vice president for People & Workplace Culture (PWC). Rick has a depth and breadth of experience in human resources and strengthening organizational culture. Most recently, Rick served as the chief human resources officer for the City of Columbia, Missouri. In addition, Rick has experience serving in similar roles in higher education, notably at Elgin Community College and Indiana State University.

Rick holds multiple degrees from the University of Missouri, including a bachelor’s degree in educational studies and counseling services, a master’s in educational counseling and personnel services, and a doctorate in higher education and foundation administration.


Associate Vice President for Facility Services

Joshua Sylvester.

On June 16, Joshua Sylvester joined SLCC as associate vice president for Facilities Services. Josh has significant experience in facility and operations management, recently serving as the director of facilities for Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. Before working with Thanksgiving Point, Josh worked as a project manager and engineer for Big-D Construction and a facilities manager for JR Simplot.

Josh holds a Bachelor of Science in construction management from Brigham Young University and an MBA from the University of Las Vegas. Additionally, Josh holds a ProFM Certification and Six Sigma Certification.



Interim Senior Director for People & Workplace Culture

Lisa Fowler.

Lisa Fowler recently accepted the appointment of interim senior director for PWC. Lisa will serve in this interim role through June 30, 2023.

Lisa holds two degrees from Brigham Young University, including a bachelor’s in English literature and a master’s in organizational behavior and human resource management. Additionally, Lisa holds a Juris Doctor degree from J. Ruben Clark Law School, BYU.

Developing a Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Program

Diversity, inclusion, and belonging (DIBs) isn’t just a buzzword. DIBs programs can have real impact on employees’ productivity and welfare. Think about the best group you ever belonged to—where you felt like everyone cared about you, understood you, and valued you as a part of the group. That is the kind of environment that promotes sharing, innovation, and growth. This course shows HR leaders how to develop a DIBs strategy that builds diverse, inclusive environments where everyone feels like they belong. Dr. Stefanie K. Johnson explains how to create a strategy for your organization and start integrating DIBs into core HR activities, such as recruitment, training, performance evaluations, and promotions. Taylorsville City Construction Update

The city of Taylorsville, Utah Department of Transit, and Utah Transit Authority have collaborated and planned multiple construction projects in Taylorsville throughout 2022-2025. Information about each project is provided below with access to a construction area map, contact information and a rough timeframe for when projects will begin. Please anticipate short-term travel delays, lane closures, alternate routes and access restrictions in the affected areas.

UDOT will begin working on the SR-292 at the Redwood Campus during the summer of 2022.

UDOT will begin a project that will improve drainage and provide a better and safer traffic flow through the intersection of 5400 S and 1900 W. Construction will start in the summer of 2022.

Redwood Road Mobility; 4100 South to 5400 South

Taylorsville City and UDOT will begin construction along Redwood Road between 4100 South and 5400 South. The project will start in summer 2022 and with anticipated completion in fall 2023.

Midvalley Connector

The Federal Transit Authority and UTA are currently under design preparations for a new Bus Rapid Transit route, connecting to Murray Central station, SLCC Redwood Campus and the West Valley Central station. Construction will run from 2023-2025.

Any questions or concerns will be addressed at a public open house focusing on the project’s environmental impact.
