Community Court Information (English)

Community Court at the Kearns Library is an opportunity for individuals to have eviction and debt related issues resolved in a community setting. For many residents, the Utah Courts can be an intimidating environment, and court hours may not be convenient for many working families. To reduce this barrier to the judicial system, the Utah Court is partnering with the Kearns Public Library to offer court services for individuals who currently have a case set to appear before the Utah Judiciary. 

When: Every third Tuesday of the month 

Where: Kearns Public Library, 4275 W 5345 S, Kearns, UT 84118

 

Working to resolve an eviction-related matter can help individuals avoid severe negative consequences such as: 

 

• Having a permanent mark on your credit history 
• Having trouble finding future housing 
• Potential court judgements for unpaid rent
• Wage garnishment 
• Collection efforts
• Attorney fees
• Trouble damages 

 

The Community Court program will have a team of attorneys, mediators, and Utah Court Staff that can help residents understand the eviction process, what their rights are, and options to avoid severe negative consequences.

2023 - 2024 SLCCSA Vision Statement

Our society has been grappling with numerous challenges: escalating inflation, job market uncertainty, and socio-political tension. The impact of these factors has made many aspects of life increasingly difficult, as housing crises and soaring prices of basic needs have become pervasive. Regrettably, education has not been immune to these difficulties. Although SLCC students strive for success, many struggle to survive. This struggle has led to a disheartening erosion of their sense of belonging and ability to learn. It is important that our college prevent this trend. SLCC recognizes knowledge gained in college is an asset to our community, especially in such challenging times. Therefore, we are more determined than ever to prioritize student accessibility. SLCC Student Association has identified three guiding questions to support our students in the face of these challenges:

• How can SLCC eliminate, reduce, or create greater transparency about the hidden costs of college?
• How can we reconnect students to campus and find greater value in their time at SLCC? 
  
• How can we enhance the online learning experience, making it both meaningful and accessible?

Affordability Is Accessibility
In anticipation of base costs like tuition and fees, students are working multiple jobs, taking out loans, and applying for scholarships. On top of that they must also support themselves and their families. Although our college is lower cost than most in the state, that is offset by the unexpected costs students encounter after classes begin. Students are unable to plan for the actual cost of college which includes books, parking, course fees, and a myriad of other hidden expenses. SLCCSA believes strongly that accessibility is affordability. By focusing on making SLCC more affordable, we can reduce the financial burden on already struggling students.
 
Connection Adds Value
Our student body represents the racial and socio-economic diversity of the Salt Lake valley, which deeply enhances the academic and co-curricular environment in which we learn. Essential to an effective and diverse learning environment is the connection a student feels to their school. Regrettably, we have seen a lack in this connection which has left our campus feeling empty. There are many issues that hinder student connection to the college, especially for diverse and first-generation students. We can improve connection by creating fun and inspiring student-centered spaces, stabilizing resources like food services, and increasing visibility and involvement in outstanding campus resources.
 
Reliable Digital Resources
We are living in a boom in innovative technology; students are more likely to enroll in online classes and use online tools. Some online platforms are hard to access and have minimal guidance in how to navigate them. SLCC currently has two challenges: representation of online students and the accessibility of online tools. Nothing interrupts your day faster than the internet being down, struggling with the basic functions of an online platform, or not being able to find accurate information online. With so many students taking at least one online course, the digital resources at SLCC are remarkably underdeveloped and unreliable. While in some cases this means adding online resources, it is often about making what is online easier. SLCCSA hopes to shed light on these issues by addressing problems with technology and the inclusion of online students.

All Career Coaching Appointments Are Moving to Handshake

Career Services is excited to announce that beginning on Monday, August 8, students will schedule all career coaching appointments through Handshake!  

This decision aligns with our departmental strategic objective to make Handshake the hub for all things career-related at SLCC and encourage more students to utilize the platform early and often.

What is Handshake?

Handshake is our portal for all career development resources and events, with thousands of jobs and internship postings.  Additionally, Handshake is where students can find and register for all of our job fairs!

How do student’s schedule appointments in Handshake?

Scheduling an appointment is easy!  Students can make an appointment by navigating to https://slcc.joinhandshake.com/appointments OR through the Handshake Mobile App. 

As a reminder, students can schedule in-person and virtual career coaching appointments on a variety of different topics, from career exploration, to searching for and applying to jobs and internships, and more!  

What about the Career Studio?

In addition to appointments, the Career Studio at the Taylorsville Redwood campus will also be open for students to drop in for support with resumes, cover letters, and job/internship resources.

What about case management in MySuccess?

Career Services coaches will still be utilizing MySuccess to track student behavioral flags and keep up on our case management.  We will continue to be united with our SLCC colleagues in utilizing MySuccess for those purposes.

HEERF Funding for Summer Semester 2022

Students enrolled in for-credit classes at Salt Lake Community College or Salt Lake Technical College for the 2022 Summer Semester will receive one federal COVID relief check of $500 or $750. The amount students will receive depends upon Pell eligibility. Qualifying students who are Pell-eligible will receive one payment of $750, and qualifying students who are not Pell-eligible will receive one payment of $500. Eligibility for the grant is not dependent upon citizenship status. 

Unfortunately, concurrent enrollment students and guest students are not eligible.

Qualifying students signed up for direct deposit will automatically receive the funds in their designated bank account. Those who are not signed up for direct deposit will receive a check in the mail at the address on file with the college. The college plans to distribute the money to students during the third week of Summer Semester for students enrolled full term. Students registered for an 8-week course during the second term will receive their funds during that term at a date yet to be determined.

Students who want to take advantage of this grant should make sure to meet registration deadlines for Summer Semester, take for-credit or Salt Lake Tech classes, and ensure their direct deposit or refund preferences are current in MYSLCC.

College Selected by Amazon as an Education Partner for Career Choice Program

On March 3, 2022, Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) announced they have been selected as an education partner for Amazon’s Career Choice program, providing Amazon’s hourly employees access to associate degree programs, industry certifications for in-demand jobs, and foundational skills such as ESL proficiency certifications.

SLCC is Utah’s largest open-access college with classes offered at more than 11 locations throughout Salt Lake County, and online. SLCC serves the state’s most diverse student body of all Utah’s higher education institutions and many of SLCC graduates transfer to four-year institutions.

Changes to SNAP Eligibility

Many of our students struggle with food insecurity. To help offset that struggle, we are excited to share that benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have been expanded to include more students. We also want to highlight other resources, including the USDA Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which provides children and teens with access to free healthy meals during the summer months, and the Bruin Pantry, which is available to SLCC students.

Salt Lake Community College encourages students and employees experiencing food insecurity to take advantage of recent changes in eligibility requirements for SNAP. Work and some other eligibility criteria are temporarily removed, allowing access to the program for students enrolled at least half-time (6 credits or more) at SLCC, who either:

1. Are eligible to participate in state or federally financed work study during the regular school year, as determined by SLCC, or
2. Have an expected family contribution (EFC) of 0 in the current academic year, as determined on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Normally, only students who participate in state or federally funded work study are eligible for SNAP, but this new temporary exemption expands SNAP eligibility to all students who are eligible to participate in work study during the regular school year, regardless of whether or not they actually participate.

Also, all students receiving the maximum Pell Grant have an EFC of 0 and, therefore, qualify for SNAP benefits. In the 2020-21 award year, the maximum Pell Grants are $3,172 per semester for students enrolled full-time, $2,379 per semester for students enrolled three-quarter-time, and $1,586 per semester for students enrolled half-time. Verification of the Pell Grant amount may be found on students’ financial aid award letter and may be used as verification that a student has an EFC of 0.

If you’re still not sure if you may qualify for SNAP, you can check out Utahns Against Hunger’s Website and their “SNAP Benefit Calculator Tool”. This calculator is intended to provide an ESTIMATE on what your benefits would be. Your actual benefits may end up being slightly more or less. For Spanish language speakers, SNAP Navigation assistance is available from Comunidades Unidas, a community organization based in West Valley.

To apply for benefits, visit the SNAP webpage on the Utah Department of Workforce Services website or contact the local SNAP office at 1-866-526-3663. Services and applications for SNAP benefits are available in both English and Spanish.

As mentioned above, the SFSP is a different service that provides free meals and snacks to all children and teens, ages 18 years and younger, who come to an approved open site or to an eligible enrolled site during summer months when schools are typically closed. More information about the program and how to find a site that provides meals is available on the SFSP website. You may also text “Summer Meals” to 97779 or call 1-866-348-6479 to find a site nearby.

As always, our Bruin Pantry is also available to SLCC students and employees who may be food insecure. More information on hours, locations and distribution can be found on the Bruin Pantry website.

These are challenging times, but we at SLCC are here to support you. We want our students to succeed not just academically but in all aspects of life. When basic needs aren’t being met, it is that much more challenging to thrive in other areas of life, but we hope that by utilizing these resources, you can mitigate some of the difficulties you may face in your daily lives and ultimately make greater progress to meet your goals.

Tips & Tricks for Submitting Your Scholarship Application

 SLCC Scholarship Application for Fall 2021 – Due March 15!

The SLCC Scholarship Application has many opportunities for SLCC students to apply to. Here are some useful tips & tricks on how to submit the best scholarship application possible! 

How to Apply for Scholarships:

1.  Register to be a student at SLCC by visiting www.SLCC.edu/apply

Only SLCC students may apply for SLCC scholarships.

 

2.  Once you have your student number, please visit https://slcc.awardspring.com/ to fill out the General Scholarship Application.

 

The SLCC Scholarship application process is designed to be easy and convenient for students. To be paired to opportunities you are uniquely qualifed for, simply fill out the General Application and answer “Yes” or “No” to thequestions. This is helpful because it saves students from searching through 200+ opportunities to figure out which ones you qualify for.

 

Tip for Success: Make sure your information in MySLCC is correct and that you have a declared major. There are many program-specific scholarships that you will only be paired to if you have a declared major.

 

3.  The General Scholarship Application has five essay questions. Please take your time with your responses, ensuring you have fully answered each specific question:

a.  What prompted you to pursue an education at Salt Lake Community College?

b.  What are your educational goals?

c.  Talk about a personal accomplishment that is unrelated to academics, but that means a lot to you.

d.  Describe a challenge you have overcome and what you learned from that challenge.

e.  What impact would receiving a scholarship have on your ability to complete your education?

 

Tip for Success: Pre-write your essay responses in Microsoft Word so you can ask an advisor or friend to proofread your responses. The Salt Lake Community Writing Center is always happy to help students with their essay questions. Visit their website for more information: http://www.slcc.edu/swc/

 

Tip for Success: Make sure you answer each specific question asked — and only that question. For example, don’t write about your financial need if the question is about your educational goals. There is a specific question about financial need where you can include that information.

 

Tip for Success: Don’t use copy/paste text from papers you have written for school. They often don’t fully answer the essay question asked and may result in a lower essay score. 

 

4.  Request a Letter of Recommendation from a non-family member such as a teacher, mentor, supervisors, etc. 

 

Tip for Success: Make sure you check AwardSpring on a regular basis to see if the person you asked for a letter of recommendation has actually submitted it. If they do not submit one, you may not qualify for some scholarships. If the deadline is approaching quickly, you may want to take back the request and ask someone else for a letter of recommendation. This is your responsibility to manage. 

 

5.  When you complete the General Scholarship Application, check your AwardSpring Dashboard for follow up opportunities you qualify for.

 

Tip for success: You might qualify for multiple scholarships! Please apply to all the scholarships that show up on your Dashboard as additional opportunities. Scholarships that have additional requirements generally have fewer applicants, which means you have a higher likelihood of being awarded.

 

6.  So you submitted your applications and now you are waiting to hear back? For Fall 2021, you can expect to hear back from Financial Aid sometime between May 2021 — July 2021. If you have a question, you can email Scholarships@slcc.edu anytime. 

Tip for success: The SLCC Financial Aid team will email your award details to your BruinMail email account. If you don’t check this on a regular basis, you may miss out on a scholarship! We recommend you forward your BruinMail email to an email account you check every day. If you receive an award notification, you must read the instructions carefully and make sure you follow all the steps, including submitting a Thank You letter.

Hundreds of students miss out on scholarships each year because they don’t reply to their award emails and we don’t want you to be included in that number!
