Effective Listening

Listening is a critical competency, whether you are interviewing for your first job or leading a Fortune 500 company. Surprisingly, relatively few working professionals have ever had any formal training in how to listen effectively. In this course, communications experts Tatiana Kolovou and Brenda Bailey-Hughes show how to assess your current listening skills, understand the challenges to effective listening (such as distractions!), and develop behaviors that will allow you to become a better listener—and a better colleague, mentor, and friend.

Learning objectives

  • Define attentive listening.
  • Explore what happened when you are distracted by delivery.
  • Recall what a mental filter is and how it can affect assumptions.
  • Explore methods for choosing the best paraphrasing response in the situation.
  • List the five listening intentions.

Managing Someone Older Than You

Managing someone older can be a challenge if they have a different way of working or communicating. However, with the right leadership, generational differences can be overcome—or even transformed into benefits for your organization. This course explains how to build more effective communication and collaboration with older workers and build a harmonious and efficient multigenerational team. Instructor and career coach John Tarnoff explains how to onboard an older worker and help established employees become more engaged and more collaborative. He also explains how to overcome age bias (both towards and from older workers) and motivate older workers to be their best, sharing the wisdom that their years of experience can provide to enrich your team.

While many other branches of psychology tend to focus on dysfunction and abnormal behavior, positive psychology is the scientific study of the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive. This 15-week, interactive program focuses on boosting optimism and positivity. It’s a series of informative sessions designed to build valuable lifestyle practices and increase your overall well-being. The course highlights happiness, gratitude, mindfulness and resilience education.

This Faculty Learning Community (FLC) is designed as an ongoing space for faculty to be in community with each other, develop trust for open dialogue, and discuss justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) issues in the classroom.

Developing an Inclusive Syllabus Workshop, Dec 1, 2:30-4:00pm 
While the syllabus is a familiar feature in an academic course, we often overlook strategies to design a syllabus that is inclusive. Whether you are an experienced or new faculty member, participants will have the opportunity to develop or assess a syllabus for inclusive components such as tone, policies, statements, and transparency. If possible, please bring a syllabus with you. 


ePortfolio Boot Camp Jan. 6, 2022, 10:00-2:00 pm 

This intensive ePortfolio training will help faculty more effectively use ePortfolios in their courses. Participants will learn how to integrate ePortfolios in course syllabi, signature assignments, and reflection activities and prompts. Faculty will also learn how to model ePortfolio pages for their students using the school’s ePortfolio platform, Digication. In addition, there will be a brief introduction to the benefits of creating your own professional portfolio. Those who complete this training will be eligible for the ePortfolio Pedagogy badge. Lunch will be provided.
