Employee Wellness Opportunities for the Upcoming Year

As we head into our new fiscal year, the Employee Wellness team would like to inform you of the health and wellbeing programs that are available to you. In addition to the physical activity programs that you can come to as your calendar allows (i.e. Drop-In Yoga & Campus Walking), there are opportunities listed below for you to learn, play, and challenge yourself in new ways. Please take time to learn more about and sign-up for Employee Wellness programs. 

Level 2 Programs

Community Walkability is a program that aims to engage participants with physical activity and community engagement through the identification and resolution of barriers in the built environment.


Submit the registration form to sign up for Community Walkability. A calendar invite will be sent with additional meeting information.

Lecture Series:

The Employee Wellness Lecture Series aims to improve the health knowledge of all full and part-time college team members. The 2022-2023 Lecture Series includes presentations on Medical Screenings, Long-Haul Covid and Environmental Health.

One Small Change:

Long-term healthy living needs simple beginnings. One Small Change is a health behavior change program that encourages participants to identify one health behavior that they would like to adopt, modify or eliminate and live that change for at least 21 days. Support for identifying a change, as well as living the identified change, comes from attending and participating in small group discussions. Submit the registration form to sign up for the group One Small Change program. Prior to the start of the program that you have signed up for, an Employee Wellness team member will email you with all of the attendance specifics you need.

Stress Management: 

This 12-week stress management program aims to educate participants about stress, the importance of having it, how to prevent it from causing harm, and how to grow through it.

Personal Training:

Participants of the Personal Training Program will receive a maximum of 16 weekly Personal Training sessions. Due to staffing limitations, this program is available to a limited number of participants. If you would like to participate, please review the Personal Training procedures then watch for the announcement email from People & Workplace Culture’s Wellness Team. If selected, your Personal Trainer will contact you to finalize your training schedule. Due to the high demand for this program, participants are selected based on if they have not participated before and/or how long it has been since they last participated. Prioritization is given to those who have not yet participated. 

 

For your convenience, the introductory information has been embedded within the intake form. You are welcome to submit the intake form now to be included in our current block of Personal Training.

Recipe Book and Mindful Meals:

This program is designed to further the connection between meal planning, shopping, cooking, and eating.  Participants will prepare, consume, and evaluate 10 recipes from either of the custom-built SLCC's recipe books.  Within the recipe book, participants will have the opportunity to learn how to incorporate mindful eating practices into their daily lives. 

This program is asynchronous and begins when you want it to begin and ends when you have completed the Recipe Rating Tool. Please download and complete the Recipe Rating Tool. To receive incentive request instructions, send your Recipe Rating Tool file to Christina McWhinnie

 

Positive Psychology 1: 

This 16-week, interactive program focuses on boosting optimism and positivity. It’s a series of informative sessions designed to build valuable lifestyle practices and increase your overall well-being. This course highlights Happiness, Positivity, Gratitude and Mindfulness education. Class enrollment will be limited to 20 participants in each section, so please register early!

Caregiver Academy:

The Caregiver Academy is a series of ten workshops that assist family and community caregivers in developing the skills needed to manage an in-home care environment. 

Each participant receives a free Managing Care Guide. There is no cost to attend the workshops, but you must register to attend.

Caregiver TalkingPoints Workshops for Employees (2022-23)

Staff Development will continue to partner with Salt Lake County Aging and Adult Services to 
offer ten new monthly Caregiver TalkingPoints workshops for SLCC employees who are caring
for aging adults. These workshops help employees develop the skills needed to manage their 
caregiving responsibilities for a better work-life balance. Each workshop is an opportunity for 
a “discussion ,” not a “listen in lecture” workshop. We encourage employees to come prepared 
to ask questions and share their challenges and accomplishments.

Caregivers are faced with a wide variety of complicated issues, such as wills & trusts, guardianships, fraud attempts, exploitation, abuse, and more.  It is helpful and often important to find official legal sites and advocates to assist in the decision-making process. Learn about utcourts.gov and other resources that assist in navigating complex legal issues.

Those we care for may need to stay in a facility due to health or safety concerns. The stay may be short-term for physical therapy or long-term due to safety and care requirements that are not available within the home. What should you know before choosing a facility? Learn about the questions, services, cultural considerations, and other challenges that need to be considered when choosing a facility.

The key to working with a facility, and knowing what to expect of them, is dependent upon the resident’s rights and wishes, as well as the contract and agreement signed. Learning Objectives

Caregiving can become costly due to needed adaptation and other concerns. Some resources, though hard to spot, are in plain sight—it just takes a little imagination to find uses for everyday items. This workshop focuses on “what” a caregiver needs done instead of “how” a task or chore is traditionally completed. Get creative, save money, and make it all work.

Learning Objectives

Mortality is one topic most people hesitate to discuss; yet it is the one topic all living beings share. Not all end-of-life moments can be planned, as some lives end quickly and without warning; however, if a person wants their end-of-life wishes met, a trusted friend or family member needs to know, understand, and have a written copy of your wishes. Start the discussion early, get organized, and have fun, yes fun, with the process.

End-of-life is not an aging issue—it is a human issue. It is important to create an end-of-life plan for the caregiver and those receiving care. Learning Objectives

The one constant in caregiving is change. Some change is good. It increases our feelings of happiness and our overall health. Other change causes pain and leads to grief. Grief is natural and normal. It tells us that the person who suffers from it is capable of love and connection. Grief is also one of the languages the body uses to tell us when help is needed to manage the challenges of life. Learn about grief cycles, coping, and more.

Bone Health:

In the Bone Health program, you will learn the basics of osteoporosis/osteopenia, understand how to better care for your bones and improve the overall health of your muscle/skeletal system. Within this program, you’ll have the opportunity to also engage in the Walk With Ease program through the National Arthritis Foundation that is designed to help strengthen joints and prevent/manage arthritis. This program will help you gain insight on the health of your bones, participate in bone-building activities in a group-based setting and discuss different topics related to bone health like nutrition, movement, and practical tips.  

 

If you have osteopenia, osteoporosis, arthritis, or are concerned about the overall health of your bones, this program will be helpful for you. All are welcome to register!

National Diabetes Prevention Program: 

The National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) is a CDC-developed program that has been shown to reduce the onset of diabetes among individuals identified as pre-diabetic by 58%. This 22-week (1 hour per session) program will be the only Employee Wellness program offered to employees who meet the requirements and choose to participate. This program is aimed to help prevent the onset of diabetes among those who identify as pre-diabetic. Pre-diabetic status can be assessed in several ways. The easiest being this CDC prediabetes screening tool. 

Register today to attend one of the NDPP Session Zero information session on August 1 and August 15. During these sessions, you will learn about the Diabetes Prevention Program and the dates/times offered.
