Diversity: The Best Resource for Achieving Business Goals

“Diversity and inclusion” has become such a familiar phrase that it’s easy to lose sight of what it means. Workplaces that incorporate a wide range of human experience—across gender, culture, age, sexual preference, and other differences—are more adaptable and more innovative places to work than their more homogeneous competitors. Not surprisingly, they do better on recruitment, retention, productivity—basically any measure of success you can think of. This course explains how to improve your organizations diversity and inclusion by thoughtfully examining the challenges and opportunities they present. Learn how to support a diverse workforce through wise management, carefully structured conversations, and a culture designed to celebrate the unique value of each team member

LinkedIn Learning bridges the gap between the career you want and the skills you need. Learn online, at your own pace, with our library of 5,000+ creative, business, and technology courses, on subjects from art to Zend Framework. Learn how to find the best courses to take using our recommendations and search tools, explore learning paths, play and pause training videos, use transcripts and exercise files, and customize your learning experience.

Virtual Training Session

10:00 am – 11:00 am

Learning Objectives

Family caregivers, friends, and community care partners play a supporting role in the life of an aging or vulnerable adult. The important question for these supportive individuals is, “Am I willing to support those I care for in the way they choose to age?” If the answer is yes, or even “yes, with a few minor negotiations”, then a caregiver is more likely to gain the trust and acceptance needed to make caring for others possible.

Testimonials from May 2020 Meditative Pause for People in Higher Education

“Thank you Andrea and Heidi once again for organizing these weekly meditative sessions. I am a firm believer in meditation, as I practice it on my own. But these weekly sessions really worked for me because it was a time for reflection as well. What I really liked about these sessions was the fact that each session centered around a theme. For instance Andrea yesterday you focused on “not trying to fix anything,” so while I was meditating I was consciously trying to led go of things that are beyond my control and that helped. When I meditative I don’t generally reflect on anything in particular but your sessions made us all reflect on issues and that helped, at least for me. I would definitely be interested if you continue with these sessions. Thank you once again”

— Aarti Nakra

“I found these session to be very valuable and re-energizing. Not to put too much on it, but I feel these are more valuable now than ever. I would be very interested in these in the future.” — Matt S. Merkel

Thank You for Making Giving Day a Success

Dear SLCC Community,

I want to offer my deepest gratitude for your generosity during our first-ever Salt Lake Community College Giving Day. Over 194 people from the college and the community went “all in” and donated $242,652 toward student scholarships and SLCC programming. We are thankful to all who took part in this effort, and your support will allow us to fulfill our mission of providing exceptional education and training to all who are interested.

Many of your donations were matched by various college partners during Giving Day, including Mountain America Credit Union, University Federal Credit Union, and SLCC’s Board of Trustees, Executive Cabinet and Foundation Board. We are grateful for their participation as they helped to deepen the impact of your generosity and made a tremendous difference in what we can provide to our students.

Again, thank you for saying “I’m in” with SLCC. Every day, extraordinary things happen here as we fulfill our mission to model inclusive and transformative education. Your support helps students, their families, our community and, ultimately, our nation. Thank you for standing alongside us; together we will create a bright future for the thousands who learn and train at SLCC.

All the best,

Deneece G. Huftalin, PhD

Tips & Tricks for Submitting Your Scholarship Application

SLCC Scholarship Application for Fall 2021 – Due March 15!

The SLCC Scholarship Application has many opportunities for SLCC students to apply to. Here are some useful tips & tricks on how to submit the best scholarship application possible!

How to Apply for Scholarships:

1.  Register to be a student at SLCC by visiting www.SLCC.edu/apply

Only SLCC students may apply for SLCC scholarships.

2.  Once you have your student number, please visit https://slcc.awardspring.com/ to fill out the General Scholarship Application.

The SLCC Scholarship application process is designed to be easy and convenient for students. To be paired to opportunities you are uniquely qualifed for, simply fill out the General Application and answer “Yes” or “No” to thequestions. This is helpful because it saves students from searching through 200+ opportunities to figure out which ones you qualify for.

Tip for Success: Make sure your information in MySLCC is correct and that you have a declared major. There are many program-specific scholarships that you will only be paired to if you have a declared major.

3.  The General Scholarship Application has five essay questions. Please take your time with your responses, ensuring you have fully answered each specific question:

a.  What prompted you to pursue an education at Salt Lake Community College?

b.  What are your educational goals?

c.  Talk about a personal accomplishment that is unrelated to academics, but that means a lot to you.

d.  Describe a challenge you have overcome and what you learned from that challenge.

e.  What impact would receiving a scholarship have on your ability to complete your education?

Tip for Success: Pre-write your essay responses in Microsoft Word so you can ask an advisor or friend to proofread your responses. The Salt Lake Community Writing Center is always happy to help students with their essay questions. Visit their website for more information: http://www.slcc.edu/swc/

Tip for Success: Make sure you answer each specific question asked — and only that question. For example, don’t write about your financial need if the question is about your educational goals. There is a specific question about financial need where you can include that information.

Tip for Success: Don’t use copy/paste text from papers you have written for school. They often don’t fully answer the essay question asked and may result in a lower essay score.

4.  Request a Letter of Recommendation from a non-family member such as a teacher, mentor, supervisors, etc.

Tip for Success: Make sure you check AwardSpring on a regular basis to see if the person you asked for a letter of recommendation has actually submitted it. If they do not submit one, you may not qualify for some scholarships. If the deadline is approaching quickly, you may want to take back the request and ask someone else for a letter of recommendation. This is your responsibility to manage.

5.  When you complete the General Scholarship Application, check your AwardSpring Dashboard for follow up opportunities you qualify for.

Tip for success: You might qualify for multiple scholarships! Please apply to all the scholarships that show up on your Dashboard as additional opportunities. Scholarships that have additional requirements generally have fewer applicants, which means you have a higher likelihood of being awarded.

6.  So you submitted your applications and now you are waiting to hear back? For Fall 2021, you can expect to hear back from Financial Aid sometime between May 2021 — July 2021. If you have a question, you can email Scholarships@slcc.edu anytime.

Tip for success: The SLCC Financial Aid team will email your award details to your BruinMail email account. If you don’t check this on a regular basis, you may miss out on a scholarship! We recommend you forward your BruinMail email to an email account you check every day. If you receive an award notification, you must read the instructions carefully and make sure you follow all the steps, including submitting a Thank You letter.

Hundreds of students miss out on scholarships each year because they don’t reply to their award emails and we don’t want you to be included in that number!
