2024 Friday Summer Schedule

Following the results of the survey from the Friday Summer Schedule Survey, Executive Cabinet approved continuing the Friday Summer Schedule in 2024.

Beginning May 17 - July 26, 2024, the College will be moving to a summer schedule and all physical locations will be closed on Fridays, with the exception of the following buildings: South City Childcare Center, Westpointe Training Center, Jordan Health Science Center, Miller Campus: Corporate Partnership Center, Conference Center, Professional Development Center and Public Safety Education & Training Center, and Taylorsville LAC for athletic camps. This change will provide many employees with the opportunity to work a 4/10 schedule and enjoy a three-day weekend throughout the summer.

Why implement a summer schedule?

Summer schedule is something many colleges and universities have adopted and something SLCC has adopted in the past. Fridays during the summer are especially slow days for many areas of the College. Following the results of a college-wide survey this past fall, there was overwhelming support to continue this schedule following last year’s pilot. Additionally, closing the physical campuses on Fridays allows us to implement some efficiency protocols to reduce energy and water usage and provide our Facilities Services teams access to Friday maintenance days without impacting college operations.

How does a 4/10 schedule work?

For full-time employees, the change is spreading a 40-hour work week over four days instead of five. If you typically work 8 a.m. -  5 p.m. Monday - Friday, your 4/10 schedule might instead look like 7:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Monday - Thursday.  There are a number of variations that can work for each team, and we encourage teams to work together to develop schedules that best meet the service priorities of the department with their leadership.

Do I have to work a 4/10 schedule?

Depending on the needs of the team and the work that the employee performs, employees, with supervisor approval, have the option of maintaining a typical five-day schedule, working remotely on Fridays. The remote Friday would count as one of the two hybrid days allowed by SLCC for hybrid/remote work. It is important to note that the College will be physically closed on Fridays, so employees will not have access to campus on Fridays during the summer schedule if their primary work location is not listed as an exception.

What about our students?

We are asking all student-facing offices to help us communicate this change. We will be sending communication to all students and prospective students and updating all websites to reflect the summer schedule to ensure our students are in the loop. We will also send messaging asking employees to add an update to their email signatures for the summer in April.

There are several holidays during the summer. How will that work?

There are several summer holidays and many fall on Monday. This means many full-time employees working the 4/10 schedule will automatically get four-day weekends around these holidays. For full-time employees, you will receive the 8 hours of holiday leave for each holiday. You have the option of using two hours of vacation pay or adjusting your schedule for the remainder of the week to make up the remaining two hours.

I am a part-time employee. How does this affect me?

For our part-time employees, this means you, too, will receive Fridays off this summer. You will work with your supervisor to adjust your schedule to complete your hours over a four-day period instead of the typical five-day schedule. During weeks with holidays, you will have the option of adjusting your schedule to complete your hours over the three days the College is open.

I am a faculty member. How does this affect me?

For our faculty members, this means you, too, will receive Fridays off this summer. We will not be holding classes on Fridays during the summer with some exceptions for SLTC and Health Sciences.

I’m a supervisor and I have questions.

We encourage supervisors to work directly with their AVP and Vice Presidents. PWC will be providing additional training and support for supervisors including discussion during Supervisor Guidance and Training sessions. We are especially mindful of providing support for employees with small children requiring childcare and supporting supervisors in providing flexibility for these circumstances.

New Online Booking Tool

Purchasing, Accounts Payable, and Travel is excited to announce that, effective January 25, 2024, we will be switching to a new online booking tool with our travel agency Collegiate Travel Planners (CTP) called Lightning. This new tool will replace Concur. This new tool has an easy to navigate interface, is faster, and provides additional features, such as booking multiple people at the same time on the same flight and the ability to see what seats on a flight are filled with SLCC travelers.

CONCUR TO LIGHTNING SWITCH-OVER

Lightning will go live on January 25. To make the switch, our Concur system will need be taken down a few days beforehand. Therefore, Concur will be unavailable starting on January 22. Any flights that need to be booked between January 22 - 25 will need to be done directly with an agent, either by email or phone.

LIGHTNING  TRAINING

In the coming weeks, we will announce training sessions for this new tool. We encourage everyone who is interested to attend.

PROFILE INFORMATION

The information in your profile, such as frequent flyer numbers, reward membership numbers, and KTNs, should transfer from Concur to Lightning. However, we encourage travelers to review their profiles prior to booking in the new system. In addition, if a travel arranger is listed on a profile, it may not transfer to the new system. Travelers may need to login to Lightning and reenter their travel arranger.

Note that this system does not replace Chrome River. You will still need to use Chrome River to create pre-approvals and expense reports.

If you have any questions, please reach out to either Lisa Bradshaw (lisa.bradshaw@slcc.edu) or Brandon Thomas (brandon.thomas@slcc.edu).
