Communicating Values

-35 minutes

Common values are the foundation of successful relationships and successful businesses. A company’s values should be the driver of every action, not just a sign on the wall. Learning how to effectively communicate your values can lead to stronger, better-performing teams that are more tightly aligned with company goals. In this course, instructor Mory Fontanez describes how to identify and communicate individual, team, and organizational values.

Teaching Civility in the Workplace

Focusing on eradicating negative behaviors isn’t always enough to create a happy workplace. Employees and managers also need to learn what they should do to make their environment a respectful and pleasant one. In this course, join Catherine Mattice Zundel as she shares how to create a happier, healthier workplace by teaching civility and setting a good example with your own behavior. Learn about negative behavior as a social phenomenon, what microaggressions look like in action, and how to replace negative language with positive words. Plus, get tips for becoming a more active listener, standing up for yourself when you experience microaggressions and incivility, and coaching others.

Caregiver Workshops for SLCC Employees (2021-2022)

Staff Development is proud to announce that we will be partnering with Salt Lake County

Aging and Adult Services to offer a selection of caregiver workshops for SLCC Employees. This

set of workshops assist SLCC employees who are caregivers in developing the skills needed to

manage an in-home care environment for better work-life balance. There is no cost for the

workshops; but you must register for the workshops you want to watch virtually. Prior to each

workshop, employees who have registered will receive a link to join the meeting. Due to the

sensitive nature of the information shared in these workshops, they will not be recorded.

CC15 – Setting Good Care Boundaries

Virtual Training Session

Thursday, September 23rd

10:00 am – 11:00 am

Learning Objectives

“Healthy boundaries are not a wall. They are the gates and fences that allow you to enjoy the beauty of your own garden” (Lydia H Hall). Keep those you care for, and yourself, healthy and safe. Learn how to set and communicate clear boundaries.

CC25 – Care Planning Meetings

Virtual Training Session

Thursday, October 7th

10:00 am – 11:00 am

Learning Objectives

Collaboration with others is a vital part of the caregiving process. No one person has all the skill, energy, and ability to serve another. A care planning meeting, traditionally known as a family meeting, is held to ensure everyone involved knows the current care plan and their essential role in the care situation.

CC26 – Improving Communication

Virtual Training Session
Tuesday, November 9th

1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Learning Objectives

Those who help the family’s main caregiver need current and easy access to information about the care receiver. A Care Binder, and other tools, such as online calendars or a blog, keep everyone in the loop. It gives others the ability to look at information on their own time, as needed—while lifting the daily communication burden away from the primary caregiver.

CC27 – Asking for Help

Virtual Training Session
Wednesday, February 23rd

10:00 am – 11:00 am

Learning Objectives

Asking for help takes courage. It means letting go—allowing others to serve in their way, and on their time schedule. Learn to ask for help in a way that gives others choice. Learn to make asking for help less stressful and more engaging.

CC28 – Understanding Behaviors

Virtual Training Session
Thursday, March 17th

11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Learning Objectives

There are two types of behaviors that need to be considered when caring for others. 1) The true nature of a person—the behaviors they have always used; and, 2) The behaviors that are present because of a diagnosis, injury, or change in health condition. Learn to differentiate between the two.

CC29 – Calming Behaviors

Virtual Training Session
Tuesday, April 12th

1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Learning Objectives

Noah Elkrief said, “A behavior is not difficult. It is the story we write about the behavior that makes it difficult for us”. Learn to separate the behavior from the story. Learn to create calm environments that keep behaviors manageable.

CC30 – Working With Behaviors

Virtual Training Session
Tuesday, May 10th

10:00 am – 22:00 am

Learning Objectives

Professionals use a variety of words when discussing behaviors—examples include, coping, guiding, and managing. What is the difference in the three and what types of technique works best with each approach? Learn skills to influence the care environment, and learn when to ask for help. Some behaviors require assistance.

2021 Housing Survey

Hey Bruins,

When you hear “college dorm room,” what kind of image flashes through your head? How many roommates, what color are the walls and, here’s the kicker: is it on SLCC campus somewhere?

In the future, it could be!

But first, we need find out what current Bruins think about potential on-campus housing. That’s why we’ve created this survey: On-campus Housing at SLCC.

It takes about 12 minutes — that’s less than your average Netflix episode — and, in exchange for your time and valuable insight, everyone who participates will be entered to win one of hundreds of prizes:

1 in 5 odds of winning a $10 gift card to Cupbop Korean BBQ,

1 in 20 odds of winning a $25 gift card to SLCC’s College Bookstore

1 in 30 odds of winning a $30 gift card to Amazon

1in 100 odds of winning a $500 gift card to your choice: Target, Walmart or Amazon

This gives you a pretty good chance of snagging something, friends. And even if you don’t, your feedback makes a difference. Truly. We’re taking this thing so seriously that we even brought in outside help from The Scion Group, a national consulting services firm who knows the college housing biz front to back.

Just think, future generations of Bruins could study and live on campus — or not, who knows? — all thanks to you.

We hope you’ll take a minute to complete the survey, Bruins. 'Cause someone has to win all those gift cards!

See you in class,

Lindsay Simons

Proven Success Strategies for Women at Work

Women are underrepresented in the C-suite. And women who aspire to leadership roles face unique challenges in today's companies. They are passed over for key opportunities, paid less than their male colleagues, and left out of critical networks and sponsor relationships. Additionally, smaller everyday challenges impede women's progress at work, like being interrupted in meetings, having their ideas stolen, or having to do 'invisible work' for no credit. Being a woman at work today requires a unique set of skills and strategies.

In this course, business consultants Deborah Kolb and Elizabeth Robillard help women learn these strategies so they can get the job they want, the pay they deserve, and the credit that counts. They provide guidance on how to identify challenges, negotiate for better opportunities and compensation, get helpful feedback, and create a network of support. In the course, they use scenarios of real women tacking these challenges and coming out ahead.

Automative Training Program Needs Vehicles

The SLCC automotive training program is in need of vehicles on which students can perform maintenance work that fits within the curriculum. We are looking for the following maintenance items:

    • Engine and emission controls: tune-ups, check engine lights
    • Suspension: front-end inspections, shocks, struts, alignments, TPMS problems
    • Basic engine items: timing belts, cooling system diagnosis, water pumps, motor mounts
    • Automatic transmission diagnosis
    • Basic electrical: battery service, charging system testing, starter system testing, lighting and accessories
    • Brakes
    • Manual transmission

All work is performed by SLCC students and requires extra time for repairs and inspections. If you need same day or rush service, this IS NOT the right option for you.

It's best for our students if vehicles are model year 2003 or newer to fit with current training technology. Older vehicles may be accepted on case-by-case basis.

For questions or to schedule an appointment, please contact Paul Felt at 801-957-5346 or paul.felt@slcc.edu.

With roughly 200,000 men and women transitioning out of the military each year, veterans are a rich source of talent to tap. Through their military training, veterans learn the importance of strong leadership and connecting jobs to mission and values. In this course, veteran recruiting expert Lida Citroën helps recruiters identify and appreciate the differences between post-9/11 veteran and civilian candidates, as well as the qualities, skills, and talents veterans offer to employers. She also addresses questions on building your company brand to be attractive to veterans. What appeals to veteran candidates and what turns them off? Where should companies spend money and resources? How do you identify the military skills you want to attract?
Last, Lida discusses ways to adapt your hiring process, teams, and systems to accommodate veteran employees, emphasizing onboarding and retention of veteran candidates.
