Open Education Celebration in March and April

In honor of global Open Education Week and achieving our program milestone of saving SLCC Students an estimated $21 million in textbook costs, the Open SLCC Team has organized a series of events, Open Champion Highlights,
and resources to bring additional awareness of OER at SLCC and beyond. Open Education Week is a collaborative effort hosted in partnership with OE Global. “Its goal is to raise awareness, showcase initiatives, and celebrate the impact of open education on teaching and learning worldwide.” Oeglobal.orgEvents, resources, and highlights for the SLCC community have been scheduled for March and April 2022, and are available for viewing any time here.

Faculty highlights include a special tribute to the efforts of our faculty, schools and departments in supporting OER work at SLCC and beyond. View SLCC Open Champions or visit here.

The Open SLCC Team has created an external resource centered on Pressbooks, JEDI, and Open Pedagogy. Visit here to learn more.

The Open SLCC Team hosted student information booths at four separate campus locations in March to raise the visibility of No-Cost / Low-Cost Textbooks available at SLCC.

Emergency Preparedness Points

A primary goal of Salt Lake Community College is to provide the safest educational and work environment possible for students, faculty and staff. To meet this endeavor, the college’s Public Safety Department and Emergency Management Division provide educational tools and training opportunities for the college community to play an active role in their personal and family preparedness.

One of the tools provided by SLCC is the Crisis Manager app that can be downloaded on your phone. This app provides protective actions, emergency procedures, and reporting phone numbers by category for quick reference.

SLCC’s Emergency Management department recently published instructions on how to create an account for the Crisis Management App in order for you to be more informed and safer during emergencies. It was brought to our attention that the previous instructions included some extemporaneous steps that may have caused confusion. Your ability to use the app does not require you to create an account. Please follow these simplified instructions to better protect yourself and others from any emergencies that may take place on campus. In our effort to continually improve safety and security, we appreciate and welcome feedback from the college community. If you have any questions or issues, please contact either John Flynt (957-4963) or Michael Gipson (957-4538) for assistance.

Also, April is Earthquake Preparedness Month. Each year we welcome many new students, faculty, and staff who may be new to Utah and the Salt Lake Valley and who may be unaware that we live on one of the world’s longest continuous faults. The Utah fault approximately 240 miles long and divided into 10 segments, each segment roughly 25 miles long.

This month there are two simple steps you can take to enhance your level of personal preparedness:

  1. Download the SLCC “Crisis Manager” app (https://www.slcc.edu/emergency-prepare/docs/crisisappflyer.pdf to have emergency procedures and incident reporting information on your phone.

  1. Visit the SLCC Emergency Preparedness webpage (What is Emergency Management? | SLCC) for information about earthquake potential in the Salt Lake Valley and plan to participate in the Great Utah ShakeOut.

Through our stories, we hope that participants will come away with stronger relationships, new ideas for JEDI work, and inspiration to take action towards creating a welcoming and inclusive working, teaching, and learning environment for everyone at SLCC. All in the community are welcome to attend. https://forms.office.com/r/1g5MM5ZQKD

LinkedIn Learning Course

Learning to Say No

Turning down requests at work can be tough. If you're a high performer who serves as a resource for other teams, it can even feel like a small failure. But saying no is actually a critical skill that all professionals must master in order to prevent burnout and honor their own needs. In this course, learn how to gracefully decline requests without negatively impacting your career or relationships.

Melody Wilding, the author of Trust Yourself: Stop Overthinking and Channel Your Emotions for Success at Work, goes over the mental blocks that can keep you from saying no. She shares tips for assertively and clearly declining requests, managing your emotions when receiving pushback, and diffusing tension. She also details how to say no in special circumstances, including how to tactfully decline requests from your boss and teammates. Along the way, Melody shares scripts and sample language you can use to implement these confidence-building techniques in real-world situations.

Communicating Across Cultures

To succeed in a cross-cultural business setting, it's important to understand the differences in how people communicate. Language isn't the only barrier. Pace, style, and nonverbal cues all affect how messages are received. If you do business on a global scale or in a diverse environment, adapting your communication strategy is critical to workplace harmony and the bottom line. In this course, Kelley School of Business professor and executive coach Tatiana Kolovou demonstrates simple techniques to build your cross-cultural communication skills: as a manager, peer, or coworker. Learn how to adapt your communication style, overcome hidden bias, and build rapport with colleagues around the world.
