Building Resilience

Have trouble getting by when the going gets tough? Everyone wants to perform well when the pressure's on, but a lot of us withdraw in times of stress or adversity. If you can build your resilience, you'll have an easier time facing new challenges and earn a valuable skill to offer employers. In this course, Kelley School of Business professor and professional communications coach Tatiana Kolovou explains how to bounce back from difficult situations, by building your "resiliency threshold." She outlines five training techniques to prepare for difficult situations, and five strategies for reflecting on them afterward. Find out where you are on the resilience scale, identify where you want to be, and learn strategies to close the gap.

Communicating about Culturally Sensitive Issues

Discussions about cultural differences can be uncomfortable. They take courage. In this course, business communication professor Daisy Lovelace shares principles and strategies that can help you have more productive, meaningful conversations on topics related to diversity. Daisy helps you understand that everyone has a unique lens based on their experiences, and that understanding and appreciating that difference is the first step in being able to discuss sensitive topics. She also outlines a number of techniques to help you navigate these difficult conversations.

Registration Instructions for the MySLCC Employee Training Portal

Log into MySLCC.

Click on the Employee Tab.

Click on Register for Training on the lower right (scroll down).

Click on the blue Register for Training link on the top left.

Click on the Training/Department Drop-Down Menu, then click on Staff Development.

Click on the Course Drop-Down Menu, then click on the workshop you want to register for.

Click on Search.

Click on Details on the right. The workshop details will come up.

Click on Register in the box at the bottom. You are registered!

You will receive a confirmation email.

Caregiver Workshops for SLCC Employees – Spring 2022

Staff Development is proud to announce that we are partnering with Salt Lake County

Aging and Adult Services to offer a selection of caregiver workshops for SLCC Employees. This set of workshops assist SLCC employees who are caring for aging adults in developing the skills needed to manage an in-home care environment for better work-life balance. There is no cost for the workshops. Register for each workshop in the MySLCC Employee Training/Registration Portal. Prior to each workshop, employees who have registered will receive a link to join the meeting. Due to the sensitive nature of the information shared in these workshops, they will not be recorded. Asking for help takes courage. It means letting go—allowing others to serve in their way, and on their time schedule. Learn to ask for help in a way that gives others choice. Learn to make asking for help less stressful and more engaging.

Learning Objectives

There are two types of behaviors that need to be considered when caring for others. 1) The true nature of a person—the behaviors they have always used; and, 2) The behaviors that are present because of a diagnosis, injury, or change in health condition. Learn to differentiate between the two.

Noah Elkrief said, “A behavior is not difficult. It is the story we write about the behavior that makes it difficult for us”. Learn to separate the behavior from the story. Learn to create calm environments that keep behaviors manageable.

Learning Objectives

Professionals use a variety of words when discussing behaviors—examples include, coping, guiding, and managing. What is the difference in the three and what types of technique works best with each approach? Learn skills to influence the care environment, and learn when to ask for help. Some behaviors require assistance.

StrengthsQuest Workshop Series – Spring 2022

Participants can advance their own development and growth by thinking, reflecting on, and applying

their talents and strengths. In this series participants can discover, develop, and apply their strengths

through the completion of the StrengthsFinder assessment and attending the Strengths Series workshops.

CH07-StrengthsQuest: Strengths In Your Career (Tier 2)

This workshop is for employees who have taken the StrengthsQuest or StrengthsFinderAssessment. We prefer that individuals have attended the Exploring Your Strengths Training, but that is not required.
