Scholarship Tips & Tricks

 SLCC Scholarship Tips & Tricks

1.  Register to be a student at SLCC by visiting www.SLCC.edu/apply

Only SLCC students may apply for SLCC scholarships.

2.  Once you have your student number, please visit https://slcc.awardspring.com/ to fill out the General Scholarship Application.

The SLCC Scholarship application process is designed to be easy and convenient for students. To be paired to opportunities you are uniquely qualified for, simply fill out the General Application and answer “Yes” or “No” to the questions. This is helpful because it saves students from searching through 200+ opportunities to figure out which ones you qualify for.

Tip for Success: Make sure your information in MySLCC is correct and that you have a declared major. There are many program-specific scholarships that you will only be paired to if you have a declared major.

3.  The General Scholarship Application has five essay questions. Please take your time with your responses, ensuring you have fully answered each specific question:

a.    What prompted you to pursue an education at Salt Lake Community College?

b.   What are your educational goals?

c.    Talk about a personal accomplishment that is unrelated to academics, but that means a lot to you.

d.   Describe a challenge you have overcome and what you learned from that challenge.

e.    What impact would receiving a scholarship have on your ability to complete your education?

Tip for Success: Pre-write your essay responses in Microsoft Word so you can ask an advisor or friend to proofread your responses. The Salt Lake Community Writing Center is always happy to help students with their essay questions. Visit their website for more information: http://www.slcc.edu/swc/

Tip for Success: Make sure you answer each specific question asked – and only that question. For example, don’t write about your financial need if the question is about your educational goals. There is a specific question about financial need where you can include that information.

Tip for Success: Don’t use copy/paste text from papers you have written for school. They often don’t fully answer the essay question asked and may result in a lower essay score.

4.  Request a Letter of Recommendation from a non-family member such as a teacher, mentor, supervisors, etc.

Tip for Success: Make sure you check AwardSpring on a regular basis to see if the person you asked for a letter of recommendation has actually submitted it. If they do not submit one, you may not qualify for some scholarships. If the deadline is approaching quickly, you may want to take back the request and ask someone else for a letter of recommendation. This is your responsibility to manage.

5.  When you complete the General Scholarship Application, check your AwardSpring Dashboard for follow up opportunities you qualify for.

Tip for success: You might qualify for multiple scholarships! Please apply to all the scholarships that show up on your Dashboard as additional opportunities. Scholarships that have additional requirements generally have fewer applicants, which means you have a higher likelihood of being awarded.

6.  So you submitted your applications and now you are waiting to hear back? For Fall 2021, you can expect to hear back from Financial Aid sometime during October. If you have questions, you can email Scholarships@slcc.edu anytime.

Tip for success: The SLCC Financial Aid team will email your award details to your BruinMail email account. If you don’t check this on a regular basis, you may miss out on a scholarship! We recommend you forward your BruinMail email to an email account you check every day. If you receive an award notification, you must read the instructions carefully and make sure you follow all the steps, including submitting a Thank You letter.

Hundreds of students miss out on scholarships each year because they don’t reply to their award emails and we don’t want you to be included in that number!

Working in Smoky Air

The fires on the west coast of the United States have sent an unprecedent amount of smoke to the Salt Lake Valley. All of us have been affected by this smoke. “Wildfire smoke is composed of harmful chemicals and tiny particles suspended in the air that present a significant health hazard for workers exposed to it. These particles can irritate the lungs and cause serious or even fatal health effects, such as:

The Utah Department Air Quality (DAQ) recommends that persons with existing heart or respiratory ailments should reduce physical exertion and outdoor activity. The DAQ maintains a web page for Salt Lake County ( https://air.utah.gov/trendcharts.php?id=slc ) where it records the level of the following harmful air pollutants on an hourly basis:

  • Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5 micrometers and smaller in size
  • Ozone
  • Nitrogen Oxides (NO)
  • Carbone Monoxide (CO)
  • Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)

If you are concerned about the air outside, you can go to the aforementioned website and see the levels of pollutants measured by DAQ. While the Utah Occupational Safety and Health (UOSH) Division does not have any regulations for employees working in the smoke from the wildfires it would be wise and prudent to limit employee exposure, where possible, to the unhealthy air, especially for those employees with existing heart and respiratory ailments. Job rotation and working a non-traditional schedule when the air is less polluted, are all suggested methods to limit employee exposure to the smoky air.

For employees working inside a building the air is filtered by the HVAC equipment to greatly reduce, not eliminate, the smoke pollutants. Lastly, we all know how to wear a cloth face mask. While not as effective as the official N95 mask it will help to reduce the effect of the smoky air on our respiratory tract.

Human Centered Leadership

What keeps certain companies standing strong year after year, while others fall away? While myriad factors contribute to a company's longevity, the presence—or absence—of caring and compassionate leaders plays a particularly critical role. The future of business requires organizations to adopt a human-centered view of leadership. In this course, Sesil Pir shares strategies designed to help you connect to your purpose as a leader and build more sustainable organizations. Sesil provides a historical view of leadership and management and highlights new perspectives that challenge the status quo of work. She introduces the core human attributes necessary for human-centered leadership and shares inside-out and outside-in interventions for supporting the development of trust-based environments.

Proven Success Strategies for Women at Work

Women are underrepresented in the C-suite. And women who aspire to leadership roles face unique challenges in today's companies. They are passed over for key opportunities, paid less than their male colleagues, and left out of critical networks and sponsor relationships. Additionally, smaller everyday challenges impede women's progress at work, like being interrupted in meetings, having their ideas stolen, or having to do 'invisible work' for no credit. Being a woman at work today requires a unique set of skills and strategies.

In this course, business consultants Deborah Kolb and Elizabeth Robillard help women learn these strategies so they can get the job they want, the pay they deserve, and the credit that counts. They provide guidance on how to identify challenges, negotiate for better opportunities and compensation, get helpful feedback, and create a network of support. In the course, they use scenarios of real women tacking these challenges and coming out ahead.

Managing in Difficult Times

Tough times separate great leaders from the rest. What do leaders do to manage effectively in difficult times? It's as much about what they do to prepare as it is about how they react. Jan Rutherford introduces important tools for keeping you and your team focused, inspired, and effective during times of change or crisis. Learn how to build self-awareness, achieve clarity and focus, keep innovating despite volatility, and develop a committed team that is resilient in the face of change. He also shares innovative strategies to cut costs, and reframe challenges as opportunities for your team.

Diversity: The Best Resource for Achieving Business Goals

“Diversity and inclusion” has become such a familiar phrase that it’s easy to lose sight of what it means. Workplaces that incorporate a wide range of human experience—across gender, culture, age, sexual preference, and other differences—are more adaptable and more innovative places to work than their more homogeneous competitors. Not surprisingly, they do better on recruitment, retention, productivity—basically any measure of success you can think of. This course explains how to improve your organizations diversity and inclusion by thoughtfully examining the challenges and opportunities they present. Learn how to support a diverse workforce through wise management, carefully structured conversations, and a culture designed to celebrate the unique value of each team member. This course includes videos from: Jane Hyun, an internationally renowned executive coach and leadership strategist Kathryn Minshew, founder and CEO of The Muse, a career discovery platform Wendy Luhabe, South African social entrepreneur Nilofer Merchant, marketing expert and TED speaker (“Sitting Is the Smoking of Our Generation”) Claire Groen, vice president of litigation and deputy general counsel at Amway Note: This course was produced by Big Think. We are pleased to host this content in our library.
