Gathering additional student insight was the number one goal in this phase. Students provided feedback on imagery, clarity and language; creating a complex web of feedback. Overall, excitement and support for the initiative won out in every conversation. SLCCSA partnered from Professor Elisa Stone, Ryan Thoroman, and Peter Moosman who created space for dialogue and feedback with students in Queer Studies courses and with the Queer Student Association. Additionally, students visiting the Thayne Center for Student Life, Leadership and Community Engagement and the Gender & Sexuality Student Resource Center were encouraged to mark down notes and impressions on each re-design. In total, over 75 students chimed in on the initiative, informing the final product for our second pilot.

Happy—and Safe—Holidays
Ghosts and goblins aren’t the only things that can be scary as Halloween kicks off the holiday season. From fire hazards to online scams, following these tips can help you stay safe during the eventful time of year between Halloween and New Year’s.
- Rather than a candle, consider lighting up your jack-o’-lantern with a small, battery-operated flameless one. If you do illuminate it with a traditional candle, remember to blow it out before going to bed or leaving home.
- Only use nonflammable decorations indoors.
- Whether you’re making holiday cookies or the Thanksgiving turkey, practice cooking safety to avoid fires at home. Stay alert in the kitchen and turn off the stove when you leave the kitchen.
- Water your Christmas tree regularly. Dry branches are a fire hazard. Turn off the tree’s lights overnight or when you’re not home.
- Place your menorah on a sturdy, non-flammable surface out of the reach of small children and pets. Never leave lit candles unattended.
- When you shop online for holiday gifts, be cautious and avoid scams by shopping with trusted retailers. Be on the lookout for emails that seem too good to be true. Don't click on links!
- Learn the weather and climate risks for the area to which you’re traveling.

Creating a culture of accountability makes life at work easier. Accountability can help create a sense of ownership and autonomy and can build up trust amongst the people you work with. However, being in a remote environment can make it harder to hold yourself, and others, accountable. In this course, business coach Mitch Simon shares his secrets for how to foster accountability in a virtual or remote environment. Mitch walks through the fundamentals of virtual accountability and the different types of accountabilities that exist. He then guides you through methods to help build and demonstrate accountability, as well as how to create the infrastructure for accountability to thrive. Finally, Mitch provides communication tips that can help you have more effective conversations that build trust and a culture of accountability. After this course, you may feel more empowered to hold yourself and those around you more accountable.

Inclusive work environments can yield greater creative output, boost employee morale, and benefit a company’s bottom line. But even as a slew of modern companies make strides towards true workplace inclusivity, many still miss the mark. This is often due to a lack of cultural competence, or the ability to engage and adapt across cultural differences. In this course, instructor Mary-Frances Winters explains why cultural competence is key to the success of any diversity-related initiative, as well as how to assess and grow your own cultural competence. She shares scenarios and techniques that can help you grasp how your worldview impacts your behavior, as well as how to more effectively engage and adapt across cultural differences.
