Digication 101

SLCC’s official ePortfolio platform is Digication. Starting Summer 2018 SLCC released the new editor of Digication. It is important for faculty to attend this workshop to understand how this platform works. Topics include how to view and navigate student ePortfolios in new Digication, creating ePortfolios using templates, options for privacy settings and an overview of the features of the new editor. During the workshop, participants will start creating a sample page for one of their courses so they can model the expectation for students. Those who complete this training will be eligible for the ePortfolio technology badge.

Creating Effective Assignments, Rubrics, and Assessments
Feb. 4 or 5; 12-1:00pm
Join the Student Learning Outcome and Assessment (SLOA) committee to learn how to design quality assignments, assessments and rubrics. This training will help prepare faculty for required assessments due by September 30, 2020 and will provide you with the prompts and tools needed to assess learning outcomes, including Critical Thinking.

Please come with your favorite assignment (assessed with scored evidence of the student’s critical thinking). If a written assignment, consider it be with minimum of three pages. If video assignment, it needs to provide enough information to assess critical thinking, or if a performance assignment, it has to elicit the student’s thinking in some way.

Join us for the Open Education Network (OEN) Virtual Campus Visit. Salt Lake Community College partners with the Open Education Network to provide professional development workshops. During this workshop, faculty will have the opportunity to explore common OER textbook misconceptions, benefits OERs can bring to student learning, pedagogical practices and delve into the Open Textbook Library (OTL). Faculty interested in attending the virtual visit with AD approval are eligible to earn a $200 stipend after attending the workshop and completing an OTL Textbook review. One Small Change (level 2 incentive):

Long-term healthy living needs simple beginnings. One Small Change is a health behavior change program that encourages participants to identify one health behavior that they would like to adopt, modify, or eliminate and live that change for at least 21 days. Support for identifying a change, as well as living the identified change, comes from attending and participating in small group discussions.

One Small Change will be 4-weeks of virtual sessions beginning February 2nd. We will meet weekly on Tuesdays from 10-11AM until February 23rd. Please register in the Registration Form.

Meditative Pause at SLCC

Join SLCC faculty Heidi O’Donoghue and Andrea Malouf each week for Meditative Pause for People in Higher Education. Each week we will take a break from doing and problem-solving to come together for ½ hour sessions to connect, relax and center via web-ex. We’ll explore breathing and relaxation techniques, as well as best practices for mindful communication and well-being. Each session will include a very brief introduction to the weekly topic, a guided meditation and then a short group reflection.

Bios: 

Heidi O’Donoghue is an Adjunct Faculty at Salt Lake Community College where she teaches The Theory and Practice of Meditation in the Exercise Science Department. Heidi is a certified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher through Brown University’s Center for Mindfulness in the School of Public Health. Heidi works as an independent contractor for Salt Lake City School District teaching MBSR and other mindfulness trainings to teachers, administrators, school counselors and social workers. She is also a registered yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance and a certified Yoga Nidra teacher through the iRest Institute.

Andrea Malouf is a Professor at Salt Lake Community College, as well as the former director of the SLCC Community Writing Center and former Vice President of the SLCC Faculty Senate in addition to many other projects and achievements in engaged learning. Her work in contemplative practices includes training and assisting meditation facilitation with Time Out Associates in the late 1990s. Most recently she has trained through the Center for Renewal and Wholeness in Higher Education at both a one-week retreat and a weekend retreat in 2019. She is a member of the SLCC Center for Authentic Leadership and Mindfulness and has facilitated a two-day retreat in 2020. And while it is different, but relative, she is also a trained mediator through the Utah Dispute Resolution/Utah State Bar Association.

Clear Air Challenge 2021

The Clear the Air Challenge is a month long competition that gives you the chance to reduce your vehicle emissions by choosing alternative methods of transportation using TravelWise strategies. By driving less and driving smarter, you will ultimately help improve air quality, reduce traffic congestion and conserve energy in Utah. 

Last year’s participants collectively saved 84,421 trips; 1,244,624 miles; 359.8 tons of CO2 and $400,000 using strategies such as carpooling, using public transit, teleworking, trip chaining, using electric vehicles and walking or riding their bikes or scooters.

As announced during SLCC360 last week, we are excited to debut Salt Lake Community College’s first annual Giving Day, scheduled February 17–18. Giving Day is an event where the SLCC community unites with local charitable organizations, college trustees, regional partners, alumni and others to support college programs that help provide a bright future to our students and their families. 

Our first Giving Day will span 1,948 minutes — in honor of the institution’s founding in 1948.  From 8 a.m. on February 17 to 4:28 p.m. on February 18, you are invited to be “all in” and donate to help make our bold vision for the future become reality. Funds raised will support scholarships and SLCC programs that enable us to provide an exceptional college experience for our students. 

And at various times throughout our Giving Day event, donations will be matched by some of the college’s most ardent supporters and friends, including Mountain America Credit Union, University Federal Credit Union, and SLCC's Board of Trustees, Executive Cabinet and Foundation Board. This is a wonderful way to deepen the impact of your donation, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of this unique opportunity. A link to the Giving Day page can be found here. 

If you are unable to donate, you can still show your support by sharing Giving Day information and stories with your friends and followers on social media. We want to involve as many people as possible in this effort, and your help in spreading the news will make Giving Day a roaring success.
